OIML R 60:2021

Metrological regulation for load cells. The pilot SMART Recommendation, fully modelled end-to-end as structured data.

Publication

  • Code: R 60
  • Edition: 2021 (E)
  • Published by: Organisation Internationale de Métrologie Légale (OIML)
  • Custodian: OIML Technical Committee TC 9 (Instruments for measuring mass and density)
  • Source PDF: oiml.org/en/files/pdf_r/r060-e21.pdf ↗

Scope

This Recommendation specifies:

  • The metrological requirements that load cells shall meet.
  • The technical requirements governing their construction and performance.
  • The test procedures used to verify conformance with those requirements.
  • The test report format that documents the results.

It applies to analog and digital load cells used in measuring systems subject to metrology control, including those integrated into nonautomatic weighing instruments (OIML R 76).

Accuracy classification

Load cells are classified by their maximum permissible error per verification interval, into four accuracy classes:

Class Description Typical application
A Highest precision Precision laboratory balances
B High precision Jewellery, analytical
C Medium precision Retail, industrial weighing
D Lower precision Coarse industrial

Each class is further specified by a maximum number of verification intervals (nLC), from 50,000 (Class A) down to 100 (Class D).

Contents by chapter

The 2021 edition is organized as:

  1. Scope and terminology, defines the domain vocabulary and references.
  2. Metrological requirements, accuracy class definitions, MPEs, repeatability, creep, hysteresis.
  3. Technical requirements, construction, marking, protection from fraudulent use.
  4. Test conditions, reference conditions, ambient requirements, equipment.
  5. Test procedures, detailed step-by-step procedures for each test.
  6. Test report format, the standardized form layout.
  7. Annexes, classification tables, MPE tables, examples.

SMART model coverage

The SMART platform models the entire Recommendation:

  • All 42 requirements with structured acceptance criteria (tiered, threshold, qualitative).
  • All 18 conformance tests with variables, procedure steps, and result forms.
  • All 12 test report forms with embedded calculations and MPE lookups.
  • The full terminology (~80 terms) cross-referenced across the Recommendation.
  • A domain ontology of ~30 OWL entities covering load-cell concepts.

The structured data is the canonical source for the interactive application’s R 60 functionality, requirements browsing, test execution, form filling, and certificate generation.
