Standard graduated glass flasks for verification officers

This Recommendation deals with standard graduated flasks made of glass, used by verification officers to check volumetric or capacity measures, for which the maximum permissible error is at least three times that for the standard graduated flask. This Recommendation applies to new standard graduated flasks, intended for the replacement of flasks actually in use, or when new flasks are to be acquired as supplementary standards.

Alcoholometers and alcohol hydrometers and thermometers for use in alcoholometry

This Recommendation applies to alcoholometers and alcohol hydrometers used for the determination of the alcoholic strength of mixtures of water and ethanol, and to thermometers for use in alcoholometry. It sets out technical and metrological specifications for these instruments, in accordance with International Recommendation No. "22 International Alcoholometric Tables".

Casks and barrels

This Recommendation applies to casks and barrels, containers which can be rolled and are used for the transport and delivery of liquids, and when completely full, to measure the liquid which they contain. Containers used exclusively for fixed warehouse storage of liquids are not dealt with in this Recommendation. To simplify the text, casks and barrels are referred to hereafter by the name "casks" only.

Part 1-2

This Recommendation specifies the metrological and technical requirements applicable to electricity meters subject to legal metrological controls. The requirements are to be applied during type approval, verification, and re-verification. They also apply to modifications that may be made to existing approved devices.

Standard weights for testing of high capacity weighing machines

This Recommendation applies to standard weights having a nominal value equal to or greater than 50 kg, used for testing (and adjusting, where appropriate) of high capacity weighing machines in  accuracy classes III (medium) and IIII (ordinary), which are defined in International Recommendation n° 3: "Metrological regulations for non-automatic weighing machines".

This Recommendation specifies the metrological and technical requirements, test methods and maximum permissible errors for the type approval of grain moisture meters used in commercial transactions of cereal grains and oilseeds.

Metrological regulation for load cells

This Recommendation prescribes the principal metrological static requirements and static evaluation procedures for load cells used in the determination of conformity to this Recommendation. It is intended to provide authorities with uniform means for determining the metrological characteristics of load cells used in measuring instruments that are subjected to metrological controls.

Automatic gravimetric filling instruments

This Recommendation specifies the metrological and technical requirements, metrological controls and tests for automatic gravimetric filling instruments (known as "AGFIs") which produce a predetermined mass of individual fills of products from one or more loads by automatic weighing.

Performance characteristics of metallic resistance strain gauges

This Recommendation deals with metallic resistance strain gauges of the type used for determining the mechanical properties of materials, for stress analysis of structures, and as sensing elements in a variety of measuring instruments.

Petroleum measurement tables

This Recommendation covers petroleum measurement tables used by Administrative Services such as Customs for official determination of quantities of petroleum and its products, under reference conditions, starting from measurements of volume or mass, temperature, density, etc.

General requirements for materials testing machines

This Recommendation deals with the machines and their essential accessories which are used for legal metrology purposes to determine the mechanical properties of materials.

Force measuring system of uniaxial material testing machines

This Recommendation gives the metrological and technical performance requirements and the inspection and testing procedures necessary for the metrological control of the force measuring system of uniaxial material testing machines subject to national laws and regulations.

Length measuring instruments

This Recommendation applies to length measuring instruments (hereinafter called "instruments") that is to say instruments (other than length measures) which determine the length of a line, wire, cable, tape, piece of cloth, strip, sheet or any other developable piece.

Calibration method for conductivity cells

This Recommendation deals with the calibration of conductivity cells by direct or indirect reference to standard solutions covered by the International Recommendation No. 56 "Standard solutions reproducing the conductivity of electrolytes".

Glass capillary viscometers for the measurement of kinematic viscosity. Verification method

This Recommendation sets out the method and means for initial and subsequent verifications of glass capillary viscometers (ordinary instruments), free liquid flow, intended for the measurement of kinematic viscosity of liquids.

Determination of intrinsic and hysteresis errors of gas analysers

This Recommendation specifies a method and the means for the determination of intrinsic and hysteresis errors of gas analysers intended for the measurement of concentrations of component gases in gas samples, during their verification.

Fixed storage tanks. General requirements

Fixed storage tanks at atmospheric pressure or under pressure (hereinafter called "tanks") are built for bulk liquid storage and may be used for the measurement of quantities (volume or mass) of liquid contained. When used for that measurement, they shall comply with the requirements of this Recommendation.

Hot water meters

This Recommendation applies to hot water meters metering the volume flow of hot water which has flowed in a pipe past the measuring cross section. The hot water meters shall have integrating mechanisms, indicating volume flow.

Requirements concerning pure gases CO, CO2, CH4, H2, O2, N2 and Ar intended for the preparation of reference gas mixtures

This Recommendation sets out the requirements for pure gases (CO, CO₂, CH₄, H₂, O₂, N₂ and Ar) used as components for the preparation of reference gas mixtures, in the 0.01 - 0.99 mole ratio range. The purpose of this Recommendation is to establish a harmonized method for the elaboration of specifications for those pure gases, which are intended for metro-logical purposes.

Electronic weighing instruments

This International Recommendation, prepared in close connection with the OIML International Document D 11 "General requirements for electronic measuring instruments", specifies the general metrological and technical characteristics that shall be exhibited by electronic weighing instruments, together with the relevant examinations and tests which shall be applied.

Heat meters

This Recommendation applies to heat meters, that is to instruments intended for measuring the heat which, in a heat-exchange circuit, is given up by a liquid called the heat-conveying liquid.

Non-automatic weighing instruments

This Recommendation specifies the metrological and technical requirements for non-automatic weighing instruments that are subject to official metrological control. It is intended to provide standardized requirements and testing procedures to evaluate the metrological and technical characteristics in a uniform and traceable way.

Westergren tubes for measurement of erythrocyte sedimentation rate

This International Recommendation applies to Westergren tubes used to determine the sedimentation rate of erythrocytes in human blood containing an anti-coagulant.

Labeling requirements for prepackages

This Recommendation covers requirements for the labeling of prepackages with respect to: a) the identity of the product, b) the declaration of responsibility for a prepackage, and c) the quantity of product in the prepackage.

Road and rail tankers with level gauging

This Recommendation specifies the metrological and technical requirements applicable to static measuring systems for volume of liquids subject to legal metrological controls. It also provides requirements for the approval of parts of the measuring systems.

Annex D

This Recommendation prescribes the metrological and technical requirements and test procedures for measuring devices and systems used for the dynamic measurement of cryogenic liquids. This Recommendation establishes the conditions that measuring devices and systems shall meet to comply with the requirements of legal metrology services.

Gas chromatographic systems for measuring the pollution from pesticides and other toxic substances

This Recommendation provides the procedures for testing and verifying the performance of a gas chromatograph (GC) system when used for the measurement of pesticides and other toxic substances in carrying out pollution control programs and in assessing the quality of food products as mandated by national laws and regulations. It does not intend to exclude any equivalent means of measurement or analysis for such toxic substances.

Gas chromatograph/mass spectrometer systems for the analysis of organic pollutants in water

This Recommendation provides performance requirements and testing procedures for a gas chromatograph/mass spectrometer/data (GC/MS) system when used for measurements in determining water pollutants in pollution control programs and in assessing the quality of water as may be mandated by national laws and regulations.

Platinum, copper, and nickel resistance thermometers (for industrial and commercial use)

This Recommendation specifies the metrological characteristics required for resistance thermometers having one or more sensing elements made of platinum, copper or nickel, designed for use in measuring temperatures in the range from – 200 °C to + 850 °C, or in a part of this range.

Part 1-2

This Recommendation prescribes the metrological and technical requirements and test procedures for automatic level gauges for measuring the level of liquid in stationary storage tanks, at atmospheric pressure or under pressure and with or without cooling or heating.

Drum meters for alcohol and their supplementary devices

This Recommendation applies to drum meters for the continuous measurement of volumes of alcohol, with supplementary devices for the determination of the ethanol content (automatically or by taking samples).

Quantity of product in prepackages

This Recommendation specifies: legal metrology requirements for prepackaged products (also called prepackaged commodities or prepackaged goods) labeled in predetermined constant nominal quantities of mass, volume, linear measure, area, or count, and sampling plans and procedures for use by legal metrology officials in verifying the quantity of product in prepackages.

Integrating-averaging sound level meters

This Recommendation deals with integrating-averaging sound level meters, i.e. instruments for the measurement of frequency-weighted and time-averaged sound pressure levels. These instruments may also measure sound exposure levels, but this Recommendation does not apply to personal sound exposure meters.

Electroencephalographs - Metrological characteristics - Methods and equipment for verification

This Recommendation concerns analogue electroencephalographs, which are defined as diagnostic medical instruments having at least eight channels. Such instruments are intended to accurately measure and record bioelectrical potentials and their time sequences as detected by electrodes attached to the surface of the human scalp.

Electrocardiographs - Metrological characteristics - Methods and equipment for verification

This Recommendation concerns single-channel and multi-channel electrocardiographs with analogue circuits which linearly amplify and display cardiac potential signals at the body surface, with respect to time.

Traffic speed meters

This Recommendation specifies the metrological and technical requirements, metrological controls and test procedures for speed enforcement devices for the measurement of traffic speed of vehicles on the road, hereafter referred to as "speed meters". The Recommendation states the conditions that the speed meter shall satisfy when results of speed measurement are to be used in legal proceedings. The Recommendation does not cover the policy of setting speed limits or trigger limits for measurements.

Wood-moisture meters - Verification methods and equipment: general provisions

This Recommendation is concerned with wood-moisture meters and specifies the methods, the equipment and the conditions for their initial and periodic verifications. The Recommendation covers all moisture meters, irrespective of their principles of operation.

Focimeters

This Recommendation specifies the requirements for analogue and digital focimeters with which the vertex powers and prismatic powers of spherical and astigmatic lenses (including lenses mounted in frames and contact lenses) can be measured and lenses can be oriented and marked.

Ships' tanks - General requirements

This Recommendation deals with ships' tanks used either for the transport and measurement of liquid products in bulk, or for the storage and measurement of the fuel oil used by the ship herself, that are subject to the control of the National Service of Legal Metrology.

Measuring container bottles

This Recommendation applies to containers, commonly called bottles, made of glass, or of any other material that is rigid and stable enough to give metrological results that are as good as those obtained with glass, when they: being stoppered or designed to be stoppered, are intended for the storage, transport or delivery of liquids; have a nominal capacity of between 0.05 litre and 5 litres inclusive; have metrological characteristics (design characteristics and uniformity of manufacture) such that they can be used as measuring containers, i.e., they may be filled with sufficient accuracy without the need to measure independently the quantity of liquid that is put in them. These containers are called measuring container bottles.

Barometers

This Recommendation specifies the metrological and technical requirements applicable to instruments for the measurement of ambient atmospheric pressure, and to their calibration, pattern evaluation and initial and subsequent verification.

High-precision line measures of length

This Recommendation applies to rigid line measures of length of high precision, either single valued or multiple-valued, on bars of metal or glass. These measures are hereinafter referred to as "line measures" or "measures".

Part 1-2

This International Recommendation specifies the metrological and technical requirements and tests for digital measuring instruments (hereafter termed "instrument(s)") that serve to determine the volume fractions of certain components of the exhaust gases emanating from motor vehicles. The conditions with which such instruments shall comply in order to meet any OIML performance requirements are also established.

Atomic absorption spectrometer systems for measuring metal pollutants

This Recommendation provides requirements for defining, testing and verifying the performance of atomic absorption spectrometer (AAS) systems when used for measuring metal pollutants in water as mandated by national laws and regulations. It does not intend to exclude any other equivalent means of measuring metal pollutants in water.

Indicating and recording pressure gauges, vacuum gauges and pressure-vacuum gauges with elastic sensing elements (ordinary instruments)

This Recommendation applies to pressure gauges, vacuum gauges and pressurevacuum gauges (ordinary instruments) with elastic sensing elements, intended for the measurement of the pressure (i.e. gauge pressure, or vacuum, or both) of liquids, vapours and gases by direct indication using a dial and a pointer (indicating instruments) or by continuous recording as a function of time (recording instruments).

Annex B-C

This Recommendation deals with sound calibrators, i.e. devices designed to produce a known effective sound pressure level or levels at a specified frequency or frequencies when coupled to specified types of microphone in specified configurations (e.g. with or without protective grid).

Measuring instrumentation for human response to vibration

This Recommendation deals with instruments (hereafter referred to as vibration-measuring instruments) designed for the measurement of time- and frequency-weighted accelerations of sinusoidal and stochastic vibrations, for assessing vibrations as perceived by human beings.

Annex F

This Recommendation deals with pure-tone audiometers designed for use in determining hearing threshold levels by comparison with the standard reference threshold levels by means of psychoacoustic test methods.

Annex C

This Recommendation specifies the metrological and technical requirements for direct mass flow measuring systems (hereafter referred to as "systems") that are designed to measure the mass of flowing liquids in closed conduits. It also specifies the relevant examination and tests that are to be conducted during pattern evaluation and verification.

Automatic rail-weighbridges - Reconfirmed in 2024

This International Recommendation specifies the requirements and test methods for automatic rail-weighbridges, hereinafter referred to as "instruments", which are used to determine the mass of railway vehicles when they are weighed in motion.

Discontinuous totalizing automatic weighing instruments (totalizing hopper weighers) - Reconfirmed in 2024

This International Recommendation specifies the requirements and test methods for discontinuous totalizing automatic weighing instruments (totalizing hopper weighers), hereafter referred to as "instruments".

Refractometers for the measurement of the sugar content of fruit juices

This Recommendation applies to refractometers used to determine the mass fraction of sugars (sucrose, invert-sugar, glucose, fructose) in fruit juices by measuring their refractive indices.

Pressure gauges and vacuum gauges with elastic sensing elements (standard instruments)

This Recommendation applies to pressure gauges and vacuum gauges (standard instruments) with elastic sensing elements. The application of this Recommendation is limited to instruments in which the elastic deformation of the sensing element is mechanically transmitted to the indicating device using a pointer and a dial graduated in legal units of pressure, and in which the upper limit of the measuring range is between 0.06 MPa and 250 MPa for pressure gauges, and between- 0.1 MPa and zero for vacuum gauges.

Pressure balances

This Recommendation applies to pressure balances equipped with either a simpletype or a re-entrant type piston-cylinder assembly, with direct loading, and which are used for measuring gauge pressure in the range from 0.1 MPa to 500 MPa.

Weights of classes E1, E2, F1, F2, M1, M1-2, M2, M2-3 and M3

This Recommendation contains technical (e.g. principal physical characteristics) and metrological requirements for weights used: as standards for the verification of weighing instruments; as standards for the verification or calibration of weights of a lower accuracy class; with weighing instruments.

High performance liquid chromatographs for measurement of pesticides and other toxic substances

This Recommendation provides requirements for defining, testing, and verifying the performance of high performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) systems when used for measurement of pesticides and toxic substances in carrying out pollution control programs and in assessing the quality of food products as mandated by national laws and regulations. It does not intend to exclude any other equivalent means of measurement and analysis.

Portable gas chromatographs for field measurements of hazardous chemical pollutants

This International Recommendation provides procedures for testing and verifying the performance of a portable gas chromatograph (GC) for use in measuring potentially hazardous chemical pollutants associated with hazardous waste sites as mandated by national laws and regulations. This Recommendation does not intend to exclude any other equivalent means of measurement or analysis of such pollutants.

Clinical electrical thermometers for continuous measurement

This Recommendation specifies the metrological and technical requirements for clinical electrical thermometers for continuous measurement of human or animal body temperature. Such instruments are normally used to monitor the temperature at appropriate body sites of a patient undergoing certain surgical procedures or during intensive care.

Clinical electrical thermometers with maximum device

This Recommendation specifies the metrological and technical requirements for clinical electrical thermometers with a maximum device. Such instruments are designed to measure human or animal body temperature.

Inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometers for the measurement of metal pollutants in water

This Recommendation provides requirements for defining, testing, and verifying the performance of inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometers (ICP systems) when used for measuring metallic and some non-metallic pollutants in water as mandated by national laws and regulations. It does not intend to exclude any other equivalent means of measuring metal pollutants in water.

Dynamic measuring systems for liquids other than water

This Recommendation specifies the metrological and technical requirements applicable to dynamic measuring systems for quantities (volume or mass) of liquids other than water subject to legal metrology controls.

Testing procedures and test report format for pattern examination of fuel dispensers for motor vehicles

This International Recommendation concerns the metrological controls to which fuel dispensers for motor vehicles shall be submitted in order to verify that their characteristics comply with the requirements of the International Recommendation OIML R 117 Measuring systems for liquids other than water. It does not apply to dispensers for liquefied petroleum gases (LPG).

Pipe provers for testing of measuring systems for liquids other than water

This Recommendation deals with pipe provers and with their use for testing measuring systems for liquids other than water (hereinafter called "measuring systems"), in order to verify that they comply with the relevant metrological requirements in the International Recommendation OIML R 117 Measuring systems for liquids other than water.

Standard capacity measures for testing measuring systems for liquids other than water

This Recommendation specifies the characteristics of standard capacity measures and describes the methods by which measuring systems for liquids other than water (hereinafter called "measuring systems") are tested in order to verify that they comply with the relevant metrological requirements in the International Recommendation OIML R 117 Measuring systems for liquids other than water.

The scale of relative humidity of air certified against saturated salt solutions

This Recommendation specifies a set of selected saturated salt solutions whose RH values at a specific temperature correspond to fixed points (or scale marks) of the scale of relative humidity. Moreover, it indicates the conditions under which saturated solutions can be used as hygrostatic solutions.

Annex C

This Recommendation deals with audiometers designed to provide a means of presenting speech sounds to a subject in a standardized manner, e.g. for the measurement of speech recognition.

Portable and transportable X-ray fluorescence spectrometers for field measurement of hazardous elemental pollutants

This Recommendation provides requirements for defining, testing and verifying the performance of portable and transportable X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectrometers which may be used for legal measurements of hazardous elemental pollutants found in various media, especially soil and waste water.

Refractometers for the measurement of the sugar content of grape musts

The refractometers which are the subject of this Recommendation are instruments which measure the refractive index of grape must before fermentation, using the phenomenon of light refraction or of total internal reflection of light. The result of measurement is given in one of the forms indicated in section III of the Recommendation. These instruments may also be used to measure the refractive index of sugar solutions and, possibly, of concentrated must.

Measuring systems for the mass of liquids in tanks

This Recommendation specifies the metrological and technical requirements for the pattern approval and verification of instruments used to determine the mass of liquid contained in a tank using methods which measure mass-related properties of the liquid while it is in a static state, e.g. the hydrostatic pressure of the liquid and gases in the tank.

Evidential breath analysers

This Recommendation applies to evidential breath alcohol analysers (EBA), which are quantitative instruments that render a measurement result of alcohol concentration in exhaled human breath for the purpose of establishing compliance, for instance, with national policy for fighting against alcohol abuse and/or for the advancement of public safety.

Radiochromic film dosimetry system for ionizing radiation processing of materials and products

This Recommendation provides requirements for defining, testing and verifying the performance of a radiochromic film dosimetry system used for the legal measurements of absorbed dose from ionizing radiation for industrial processing of materials and products.

Ergometers for foot crank work

This OIML Recommendation applies to ergometers for foot crank work (foot crank ergometers) used in the medical field for the defined and reproducible physical stressing of subjects (patients). It is intended to define minimum requirements for the performance and efficiency of these devices and to achieve accurate and comparable medical results.

Multi-dimensional measuring instruments

This Recommendation specifies the metrological and technical requirements for the type evaluation of multi-dimensional measuring instruments used to determine the dimensions and/or dimensional volume of an object for the purpose of calculating charges for postage, freight or storage.

Octave-band and one-third-octave-band filters

This Recommendation deals with sets of octaveband and one-third-octave-band filters (filter sets), i.e. devices capable of providing, or designed for operation with devices capable of providing, time-average levels of frequency-band-filtered spectral information for a wide variety of signals, for example, time-varying, intermittent, and steady; broadband and discrete frequency; and long and short durations.

Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) dosimetry systems for ionizing radiation processing of materials and products

This Recommendation may be applied for PMMA dosimetry systems used to control and supervise any application of ionizing radiation for industrial processing of materials and products. It does not cover, nor does it exclude, the use of other equivalent means of measurement or determination of absorbed dose for such applications.

Alanine EPR dosimetry systems for ionizing radiation processing of materials and products

This Recommendation may be applied for alanine EPR dosimetry systems used to control and supervise any application of ionizing radiation for industrial processing of materials and products. It does not cover, nor does it exclude, the use of other equivalent means of measurement or determination of absorbed dose for such applications.

Liquid-in-glass thermometers

This Recommendation specifies the metrological and technical requirements for general-purpose, liquidin- glass thermometers intended for laboratory use as reference or working temperature standards. The thermometers are graduated in degrees Celsius and divided into six accuracy classes that apply to thermometers operating within the temperature range of –200 °C to +500 °C.

Automatic instruments for weighing road vehicles in motion and measuring axle loads

This International Recommendation specifies the requirements and test methods for automatic instruments for weighing road vehicles in motion, hereinafter referred to as "WIM instruments" that are used to determine the vehicle mass, the axle loads, and if applicable the axle-group loads of road vehicles when the vehicles are weighed in motion.

Spectrophotometers for medical laboratories

This Recommendation provides requirements for defining, testing and verifying the performance of spectrophotometers used in clinical chemistry laboratories to determine concentrations of analytes in samples of blood, serum, plasma, liquor cerebrospinalis, urine, etc. derived from the human body by measuring the characteristic partial internal absorbances of prepared solutions in optical cells (cuvettes).

Instruments for measuring the areas of leathers

This Recommendation specifies the requirements and test methods for instruments that are used for determining the area of leathers, hereafter called "leather-measuring instruments".

Amendment 2014

This Recommendation applies to gas meters based on any measurement technology or principle that is used to measure the quantity of gas that has passed through the meter at operating conditions. The quantity of gas can be expressed in units of volume or mass.

Amendment 2009

This Recommendation applies to volumetric containers or vessels used to measure, and when applicable to store and transport, liquids for commercial transactions.

OIML Recommendation 139

The measuring systems that are covered by this Recommendation are intended for the fueling of road vehicles, rail engines, boats, vessels, and aircrafts with compressed natural gas (CNG), compressed gaseous hydrogen, biogas, gas blends or other compressed gaseous fuels.

Measuring systems for gaseous fuel

This Recommendation applies to measuring systems for gaseous fuel: - with a designed maximum flowrate Q_max equal to or greater than 100 m³/h at base conditions and for operating pressures equal to or greater than 200 kPa (2 bar) absolute; - not fitted with diaphragm gas meters.

Procedure for calibration and verification of the main characteristics of thermographic instruments

This Recommendation applies to general purpose thermographic instruments and specifies the procedure for their calibration, and also for their initial and subsequent verifications.

Automated refractometers

This recommendation specifies the metrological and technical requirements for refractometers, which have either just been manufactured, are in service, or which have just been repaired.

Instruments for the continuous measurement of SO2 in stationary source emissions

This Recommendation applies to measuring instruments (hereafter referred to as "gas analytical systems") that serve to determine the volume fraction of SO₂ and establishes the conditions and requirements with which such systems shall comply in order to meet the requirements for measurement results of the pollutant content in stationary source emissions within the OIML Member States.

Instruments for the continuous measurement of CO and NOx in stationary source emissions

This Recommendation applies to measuring instruments (hereafter referred to as "gas analytical systems") that serve to determine the volume fraction of carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen monoxide (NO), nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), or sum of nitrogen oxides (NO_x) and establishes the conditions and requirements with which such systems shall comply in order to meet the requirements for measurement results of the pollutant content in stationary source emissions within OIML Member States.

When referring to applanation tonometers, which measure the force necessary to applanate the cornea over a given diameter using the flat contact side of a pressure body, this Recommendation covers the method developed by Hans Goldmann.

Protein measuring instruments for cereal grains and oilseeds

This Recommendation includes metrological and technical requirements and test methods for the metrological control of digital, self-indicating measuring instruments used to determine the protein content of grain and oilseeds for commercial transactions. It specifies accuracy requirements including maximum permissible errors (MPEs) for verification and other error limits for type evaluation tests.

Standard blackbody radiators for the temperature range from -50 °C to 2500 °C

The present Recommendation applies to BBR intended for the calibration, verification and engineering work in the production, maintenance and adjustment of reference and working radiation thermometers, thermal imaging instruments and radiometers in the temperature range from –50 °C to +2500 °C; it describes methods and procedures for their calibration and verification.
